Shropshire County Pension fund

Taking care of your Local Government Pension in Shropshire

Councillors and the LGPS

The LGPS was available to councillors and elected mayors of an English County Council or District Council, who joined the scheme before 31 March 2014.

Councillors who were members of the scheme on 31st March 2014 continued to accrue rights until the end of the term of office, but applications from a Councillor to join the scheme cannot be accepted after 31 March 2014.

The term ‘until the end of the term of office’ means that you will cease to be a member of the LGPS at the end of the term of office that you were serving on 1 April 2014. This was confirmed in the written Ministerial statement found at the bottom of this page.

Further to the May 2017 local elections, there are no active Councillor members of the LGPS in the Shropshire County Pension Fund, as the term of office Councillor’s were serving on 1 April 2014 has now ended.

Upon ceasing to be an active member of the scheme, you may be able to make an election to draw your pension based on your entitlement under the scheme regulations. Further information on when your benefits can be paid can be found in the scheme guide below.

For more information about the scheme and its features for Councillor members please see the Councillors Scheme Guide.
