Shropshire County Pension fund

Taking care of your Local Government Pension in Shropshire

Councillors and the LGPS

The LGPS was previously available to Councillors and elected mayors of an English County Council or District Council, who joined the scheme before 31 March 2014. This Scheme is now closed as Councillors could only remain in the LGPS until the end of their current term of office.

This was confirmed in the written Ministerial statement found at the bottom of this page. This means that since the recent local elections, there are now no active Councillor members of the LGPS in the Shropshire County Pension Fund, as the term of office Councillors were serving on 1 April 2014 has now ended.

Upon ceasing to be an active member of the scheme, Councillor members were written to and some may be able to make an election to draw their pension based on their entitlement under the scheme regulations. Further information on when individual benefits can be paid can be found in the scheme guide below.

For more information about the scheme and its features for Councillor members please see the Councillors Deferred Scheme Guide.
