Independent Registered Medical Practitioners (IRMPs)

Publication date: 07/02/2022 09:00:18

At the 17 January 2022 Pensions Committee, three new independent registered medical practitioners (IRMPs) were added and one IRMP was removed from our approved list.

Such requests must be approved by committee members. The IRMPs added are Dr Naeem, Dr Bland and Dr Pool while Dr Dowson has been removed. Any opinions provided by Dr Dowson up until 17 January 2022 can be accepted.

All three new IRMP’s meet the requirements outlined in the LGPS 2013 regulations for an approved IRMP which are:
"IRMP" means an independent registered medical practitioner who is registered with the General Medical Council and-
• holds a diploma in occupational health medicine (D Occ Med) or an equivalent qualification issued by a competent authority in an EEA state; and for the purposes of this definition, "competent authority" has the meaning given by section 55(1) of the Medical Act 1983 (74) ; or
• is an Associate, a Member or a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine or an equivalent institution of an EEA state

If you are dealing with an ill health retirement please make sure you are using an IRMP from our IRMP approved list who is able to provide the opinion under the LGPS regulations. The fund cannot accept the opinion if an unapproved IRMP is used.
