Taking care of your Local Government Pension in Shropshire

Firefighter

Welcome to the Firefighters’ area of the Shropshire County Pension Fund (the Fund) website. The Fund is an administering authority of the Local Government Pension Scheme and administers Firefighters’ pensions on behalf of the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

There have been different variations of the Firefighter’s Pension Scheme over the years; the Firefighters Pension Scheme 1992, the New Firefighters Pension Scheme 2006 and the Firefighters Pension Scheme 2015. The Retained Modified Scheme exists as an annex of the 2006 Scheme for those Special Firefighter Members who were offered the chance to buy back previous service and convert this service to Special Modified membership. The final scheme is the Firefighter’s Compensation Scheme which offers qualifying members a non taxable injury pension and a lump sum gratuity subject to meeting certain criteria.

All new firefighter members will join the 2015 scheme, where as some existing members may have membership from the 2015 scheme and the previous schemes, depending on when they joined and what protections they have.

As a result, the 1992 and 2006 Schemes are still available to those members who were granted Tapered or Protected Membership of these Schemes. Please see below an illustration of the various schemes.
