Modified Scheme Benefits available to Special Firefighter Members
If you are a Special Firefighter member with service in the Retained Modified Scheme your pension benefits will be based on legislation from both the 1992 and 2006 schemes.
Opting out of modified scheme
If as a Special Firefighter member you leave the modified scheme before becoming entitled to immediate payment of pension, you will become entitled to a special deferred pension, payable from age 60 years. You will not be able to rejoin the modified scheme.
Under the modified scheme, as a Special Firefighter member, you may elect to commute part of your annual pension for a lump sum.
The commutation factor will be based on the 1992 scheme commutation rate.
The modified scheme will pay a death grant on equivalent terms as that provided by the 1992 Scheme i.e. two times the deceased member’s pensionable pay at the time of death, expressed as an annual rate.
As s Special firefighter member of the modified scheme if it is determined that you are considered permanently disabled for undertaking your role as a firefighter, you may be eligible to retire on the ill-health terms of the standard 2006 scheme.
