How to join
To be able to join the LGPS, you must be under 75 and work for an employer that offers the scheme.
If you start a job in which you are an ‘eligible member’ under auto enrolment law, you will be brought into the scheme and contributions will be taken from your pay. However, if your contract of employment is for three months or less, you may not be automatically brought into the scheme. If this is the case and you want to join, you can complete a ‘new member form’.
On joining the LGPS, a record will be set up for you and a letter confirming your membership will be sent to your address. You should check your payslip every month to make sure that pension contributions are being taken.
If you are brought into the scheme and don’t want to stay in it, you can ‘opt out’. However, you can only fill in an opt out form when you start your job. Visit the page ‘opting out of the LGPS’ for more information.
