How to join

To be eligible to join the LGPS you need to be under the age of 75 and work for an employer that offers membership of the scheme.

If you start a job in which you are eligible for membership of the LGPS you will be automatically brought into the scheme and contributions will be deducted from your pay. However, if your contract of employment is for 3 months or less you may not be automatically brought into the scheme by your employer. If this is the case and you wish to be a member of the scheme you can opt to join by completing a New Member Form.

On joining the LGPS a record will be set up on your behalf and an official notification of your membership of the LGPS will be sent to you. You should also check your pay slip to make sure that pension contributions are being deducted.

If you are brought into the scheme and you do not wish to remain in it, you have the right to opt out. You can only complete an Opt Out Form when you have started your employment. Please go to the Opting Out of The LGPS page for more details.
