Thinking about transferring?
Can I transfer my existing pensions into Shropshire County Pension Fund?
If you’ve joined the LGPS in your current job in the last twelve months, you can transfer in other non-LGPS pension benefits you may have. You only have twelve months to make this decision, unless your employer and the pension fund allow you longer.
Visit our webpage on 'Transferring benefits into the LGPS' for more information.
Can I transfer my LGPS pension to another pension provider?
If you’re still an active member paying into the scheme, you can’t transfer your pension to another provider.
However, if you leave the scheme and you’re given deferred benefits or a refund, you can transfer your pension benefits into another pension arrangement or a new workplace pension scheme, unless:
- you leave the scheme with less than a year before your normal pension age
- you decide to transfer less than a year before your normal pension age
- You’re still paying into the LGPS in another job
- You’re being paid your benefits as an LGPS pension
If you’re a member who has left the scheme, please visit our webpage on ‘transferring benefits out of the LGPS’ and be sure to read the information on how to keep yourself safe from pension scams.
How do I work out the value of my pension to transfer to another pension provider?
I already have a LGPS pension. Will it be transferred to my new LGPS pension automatically?
If you leave the LGPS with a deferred benefit and later re-join the scheme, your deferred benefits will, in most cases, be moved to the active pension account for your new job.
If you want to keep your deferred benefit separate, you must normally choose to do so within twelve months of re-joining the scheme. Although, your employer may allow you longer to decide.
If you leave the LGPS and are entitled to a refund of contributions (normally because you have less than two years’ membership), and you don’t take this refund and re-join the scheme, then this deferred refund must be joined with your new active pension account.
Can I transfer my AVCs to a different pension arrangement?
If you’ve stopped paying AVCs, you can transfer your AVC fund to another pension scheme or arrangement. This includes transferring to schemes offering flexible benefits. You can even transfer your AVC fund if you’re still paying into the LGPS.
